Yom Kippur greetings: what is appropriate to say?
What to say on Yom Kippur, whether Happy Yom Kippur is appropriate, considerate messages for friends and colleagues, plus UK dates and London times for 2026.
Use language that fits the moment.
The direct answer
“Have a meaningful Yom Kippur”, “G’mar Chatima Tova” or “Wishing you a meaningful and easy fast” are considerate Yom Kippur greetings. “Happy Yom Kippur” is not the usual expression because the day is solemn and reflective rather than festive. If you do not know whether someone fasts, wish them a meaningful observance instead of assuming that they do.

What not to say or assume
“Happy Yom Kippur” is well meant but not the customary greeting. “Meaningful Yom Kippur” better reflects the day.
Do not assume that every Jewish person fasts. Health, age, pregnancy and personal practice can all affect observance.
Avoid scheduling celebrations, catered lunches or non-essential deadlines for someone you know is observing.
Do not send a marketing offer dressed as a Yom Kippur greeting.

Guidance beyond the greeting
What does G’mar Chatima Tova mean?
G’mar Chatima Tova, with several common English spellings, means a wish for a good final sealing in the Book of Life. It is a traditional greeting before and during Yom Kippur. You do not need to use Hebrew; a sincere English wish is entirely appropriate.
Should I say “easy fast”?
“Have an easy fast” is common when you know the person is fasting. Some people prefer “a meaningful fast” because the purpose is spiritual rather than physical ease. Combining the two—“a meaningful and easy fast”—is a considerate option.
If you are unsure whether they fast, say “Have a meaningful Yom Kippur”. It acknowledges the day without asking for personal information.
When should I send the message?
Send it before sunset on Sunday 20 September 2026. Many observant people will not use phones, email, drive or work during Yom Kippur, so a Monday daytime message may not be seen until the fast has ended.

Questions, answered clearly
Is it appropriate to say Happy Yom Kippur?
It is not the standard greeting because Yom Kippur is solemn. “Have a meaningful Yom Kippur” is the safest English alternative.
What should a non-Jewish colleague say?
“Wishing you a meaningful Yom Kippur” is respectful and does not assume how the person observes. If you know they fast, you can add “and an easy fast”.
